Accommodations For Your Dream Safari

Let’s be honest, where you lay your head at night significantly impacts your overall spending. With that said, Kruger as a plethora of options, from campsites and self-catering chalets within the park to budget-friendly guesthouses and lodges right outside the gates. It all depends upon the desired experience and price-point, and they all have their own vibe. But making smart choices here can free up your funds for other adventures (such as an extra game drive or a delicious braai under the stars).

Inside Kruger National Park

Campsites: For the really budget-conscious and adventurous traveler, camping is king. SANParks (South African National Parks) offers many campsites within the park. There’s basic pitches or more developed sites with hygienic facilities. Regardless of which one you choose, this is the most affordable way to stay inside the park while immersing yourself in the sounds of the bush. Just imagine falling asleep to the distant cries of a hyena clan! Of course, be prepared for some close encounters with nature!

Self-catering Chalets and Huts: A dream safari could also include a bit more comfort than camping, if your budget allows for it. You’ll get a private space that has some basic cooking facilities. Also, its great for families or those with a little more need for privacy. In addition, you can self-cater your meals, which saves money on restaurant costs. There’s so many chalets available, from rustic huts to more modern options, so you’re bound to find something fitting for your budget

Rest Camps: Mini villages within Kruger National Park, these sites offer a range of accommodation options. You can choose from basic huts to a more luxurious bungalow. Typically, they will also have communal facilities such as restaurants, shops, and swimming pools. These camps are fantastic for those who want amenities and do not want to cook all the time. However, keep in mind that they will be a bit pricier than the prior two options.

Outside Kruger National Park

Guesthouses and Lodges: Just outside of Kruger’s gates, there are so many guesthouses and lodges. They cater to all budgets, so you should not have a hard time finding one. These can be great if you have trouble finding availability inside the park, or perhaps want something a little more luxurious. Some even offer shuttle services to the park, providing easy access to game drives.

Backpacker Hostels: This is for the extremely budget-conscious traveler, especially those that go solo. These offer dorm rooms and communal facilities. While lacking in privacy, they are a great way to meet other travelers and share safari stories.

Booking Tips

Book in Advance: Kruger is a very popular destination. Peak season is winter months. While peak is busiest, it is also the best time to go to avoid poor weather and malaria risks. As a result, you should book well in advance to secure your accommodations.

Check for Specials: Keep an eye out for special offers and discounts on the SANParks website, or even travel agencies.

Consider Time of Year: Again, peak is best for weather and malaria. However, prices vary of course depending on season. The shoulder seasons, being spring and autumn, usually offer better deals.

Fueling Your Dream Safari

Embrace the BraaiA braai (barbecue) is a South African staple. It’s also the perfect way to enjoy a both delicious and affordable meal in Kruger. Cook some boerewors (sausage), steak, or chicken over the coals under the African stars. Most campsites and chalets have braai facilities. However, you may have to bring/purchase your own charcoal and firelighters.

Pack Smart: Plan your meals in advance and pack snacks to hold you over throughout the day. Perhaps even bring a cooler bag to keep things fresh, should you stock up on perishables.

Stock Up Outside the ParkGroceries inside of Kruger are more expensive typically. Be sure to stock up on supplies at a market outside the park before entering. This is especially true if you are planning on staying in accommodations within the park.

Embrace the Dawn: Early morning game drives are not just the best time for wildlife spotting. Additionally, they sometimes offer the opportunity for a free “bush breakfast,” or a light breakfast/meal as the sun rises over the savanna.

Of course, it’s important to enjoy the incredible experience of Kruger without stressing about food costs. With a little planning and some savvy choices, you can savor both the stunning scenery and the delicious flavors of South Africa without emptying your wallet.

Dream Safari Activities

Drives

Self-Drive Safaris: Self-driving is the most popular way to explore Kruger. Also, it is the most affordable method. You have complete control of your itinerary, pace, and discoveries. Pack a map, grab some binoculars and hit the open road (or, more accurately, the designated game-drive roads). There is nothing like the thrill of spotting a lion in the bush or a herd of elephants crossing your path!

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for game-viewing. Going back to the food topic, be sure to pack snacks and drinks so as to not rely solely on the pricey rest camp shops. Also, be sure to take advantage of the sighting boards at rest camps to see where other visitors have spotted wildlife. Above all, be patient! The best sightings come when you least expect them.

Guided Game Drives: While self-driving is, in my opinion, the best (and cheapest) way to experience Kruger, nothing beats a guided night drive. These are not possible for independent travelers, as the park is not open during these hours of the night. Night drives also, in a way, open up a whole new world. While I do not typically enjoy or advocate for “tours”, these are different. They are a unique opportunity to see nocturnal animals. It can be a splurge, but it is worth considering if your budget allows.

Other Activities

Bush Walks: Again, tours are not my thing. I have also never actually had first-hand experience doing a bush walk. However, from what I have seen, researched, and heard, they are a truly immersive experience. These walks are led by experienced (and armed) rangers. You are given a chance to learn smaller details about the bush, such as tracking animals and identifying plants. Again, it is an added cost, but provides a very different perspective of Kruger. It is something I hope to do on my next adventure safari, myself.

Birdwatching: I know, I know, *yawn*. But, Kruger is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 500 species. All you need is binoculars and, maybe, a bird guide (if you want to spend a little more for a better chance). You will be amazed at how many different species you can spot. Besides a possible guide, it is an otherwise free activity that adds another dimension to your safari experience.

Rest Camp Relaxation: Do not underestimate the value of simply relaxing at a rest camp. Many of the camps, especially if you are staying there, have swimming pools where you can cool off after a long game drive. There are also cafes and shops, allowing you to unwind and recharge.
